Vaping and Driving

Is Vaping and Driving Legal? Smart? Stupid? Stinky?

Know the facts before getting behind the wheel.

Before we dig into this topic, let’s make it clear that this is not a post to judge or reprimand anyone. This is about making sure that disposable vapes are enjoyed responsibility and offered up to provide vape fans with the information they need to make smart and informed decisions. Now that we’ve got that out of the way… is it a good idea to puff on a disposable vape when you’re behind the wheel? You can probably guess the answer, but do you know why?

Is it Legal to Drive and Use a Disposable Vape?

Like smoking, vaping is not illegal on a federal level in the United States. So, you shouldn’t get in any trouble for vaping while driving. There is an exception, however, and it’s a good one.

Never Vape with Kids in the Car!

In some states, both smoking and vaping with a child in the vehicle are prohibited. So, if you’re driving with your child or someone else’s in the car, hold off on the vaping until you have a free moment. Regardless of the legalities, vaping in an enclosed space around children is not vaping responsibly. Vapor contains substances that might be harmful to young children, so please never vape around kids – especially in enclosed spaces.

Is Vaping While Driving Smart?

If you’re going to do it, be sure to open the window and blow your vapor outside. If you’re like most vapors, after a disposable hit you release a lot of vapor, and this could impair your vision if the cloud is blown directly toward your windshield and into your field of vision. That’s dangerous. In fact, people are often pulled over by law enforcement officers while vaping and driving, but not because they are vaping and driving. It’s because they are driving erratically, most likely because their vision became “clouded”, or they were distracted by the act of vaping. The same thing that happens with smartphones and driving.

Additionally, vapor from the e-liquid in most disposable vapes can leave a sticky residue on your windshield that can also inhibit vision, especially when driving in bright sunlight or extremely dark conditions.

The point is, it can be difficult to pay full attention to the road while puffing on a disposable vape. Still, driving and vaping may be hard to avoid entirely, especially if you’re traveling lost distances or stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic. However, if you can wait until you’re at your destination before hitting your disposable vape, we suggest doing it.

Will Disposable Vapes Make My Car Smell?

Smell bad? That’s a matter of opinion. Certainly, the olfactory affects aren’t as unpleasant or nearly as intense as smoking cigarettes in the car. Still, disposable vapes contain salt nicotine e-liquid that when vaporized and exhaled can stick to surrounding surfaces, including leather and fabric upholstery and glass. In other words, yes, vaping can leave a less than enjoyable stink in your car.

On the plus side, the residue causing the smell can usually be removed very easily with soap and water. You may want to try a little vinegar diluted with water to clean those glass surfaces. After cleaning, if you vape and drive again, the smell will likely return. Blowing your vapor out an open window can certainly help, but there’s always going to be some that remains in the car and lingers. So, you can expect your car to smell if you vape in it.
